I;ve had my hands on a few 2.1 boards in the past. They seem to always come up short. Not this one! With DSP, DAC, fiber optic in and whole house audio…this offers everything I have been looking for in a 2.1 amplifier.
Let’s be honest with Audio there is typically a certain amount of WAF (wife acceptance factor) that needs to be considered. And typically subwoofers are the least accepted component of a home theater or stereo. They are just ugly boxes that sit in the corner and make loud booms aka bass. But what if we could take that same subwoofer and make it not only a central part of your home theater, but also a central part of your home décor? That is exactly, what I choose to do.
It seems like this would be an easy decision. Just pick the box that best fits your design goal. But did you know that there are two differing rules of thumbs on what type of box a driver would best be utilized in? Seriously. One of them uses the QTS of the driver, while the other uses a formula called Efficiency Bandwidth Product. Let’s talk about both for a minute.
The Klipsch KL-650 THX Ultra II were iconic in the Home Theater Industry. It was one of the first times I remember that you could affordably buy speakers that were truly designed for a small movie theater, for your own home theater. However, when I say affordably, they still cost around $$3500 for a pair! And for the entire system…a cool $13,000! And although, for movie theater speakers, that isn’t crazy, it is still a lot more than I want to spend on my Home Theater. And truthfully, I think that is the same as most other people. SO why not build some, for a lot cheaper.
There’s a new name in HiFi drivers – Punktkilde. Although, you may not have heard of them, you may have heard of their sister company, Scan-Speak. Scan-speak, often referred to as some of the highest quality HiFi drivers one can buy, designed every one of these Punktkilde drivers that I recently received for review. OnceContinue reading “First look at Punktkilde – New hifi drivers”
Is this the cheapest, best way to add DSP to your subwoofer?
I have lost count how many times someone has asked me, how do I get room filling sound from the speakers I am building? This is a more complicated question, that we should take some time on The first thought, is I want bigger speakers. Or the drivers, I use should be bigger. If theyContinue reading “How to Fill your room with sound?”
If you have been following me at all, you know I absolutely love the Tang Band W5-1138smf. It is an absolute masterpiece and a fine example of what a 5 1/4″ driver should be capable of. This is the same subwoofer, that is getting national attention in the Dinas build. It isn’t often you canContinue reading “Mini Earthquake – An 8″ Cube of Bass”
The SMSL SA300 is loaded with features and customization. Could this be the best amplifier under $150? The amplifier itself came with a few pamphlets and a user manual. Although the user manual looks small, it was quite thorough on the operation of the amplifier and remote control. The box also contained a USB cord for the DAC, a massive power supply that is capable of outputting 162 watts, a Bluetooth antenna and a remote control.
